We are living in a time where climate change is no longer a problem of the future but a tangible reality of the present. In the face of this global challenge, the need to communicate, educate, and move people emotionally becomes urgent. In this context, cinema emerges as a powerful tool to stir emotions, awaken consciences, and promote action.

It was an honor and a true joy to be invited to participate, on World Environment Day, in the Cinema and Sustainability Sessions organized by the Academia de Cine (Spanish Film Academy)— a place that proves art and activism can (and should) go hand in hand.

I had the privilege of taking part in the session “Nature cinema as an educational tool for conservation”, sharing my experience as director of Memorias de un mar, alongside deeply committed professionals such as Lexeia Larrañaga (Natura Bizia), José Antonio Vallejo (Un cuento de gineta), and Arturo Menor (Iberia, naturaleza infinita). The conversation was masterfully moderated by producer Piluca Baquero.

Throughout the session, we reflected on the role of nature cinema as a vehicle to reconnect audiences with the value of biodiversity and the urgency of preserving our ecosystems. In an increasingly urban and digital world, these stories become bridges to invisible realities, capable of awakening empathy, knowledge, and responsibility.

From my own experience, I firmly believe in the power of cinema to create impact. Showcasing the beauty —and also the fragility— of the natural environment is a way to raise awareness and generate emotional commitment to the planet.

I am truly grateful to the Spanish Film Academy for opening such a necessary space. I trust that more and more creative voices will join this alliance between storytelling and sustainability. Cinema doesn’t just tell stories — it can also inspire real change.
