When Curiosity and Science Meet, Art Comes to Life

What happens when the curiosity of primary school girls and boys meets the knowledge of expert female scientists in water? An incredible project is born—where art brings science to life!

It all started with a question within the learning plan at Trentapasses School in Vilalba Sasserra (Barcelona): what do we want to know about water? From climate change to pollution, students explored their doubts and, in groups, chose the question that sparked their curiosity the most.
.

Fascinating questions emerged: What would happen if all the planet’s fresh water dried up? Why are there such big floods? Can pollution evaporate? What if all water were contaminated? Can you touch a rainbow? How is a polluted drop formed? Each student expressed their question through a drawing, using art to translate scientific concepts into visual images. Art allows complex ideas to be expressed in an accessible way, stimulating imagination and critical thinking.

These drawings were sent to female scientists from different institutions such as CEAB, IDAEA, and UdG, some of them part of the Gender AiL group. Their challenge: to respond to each question in a one-minute video, clearly and engagingly explaining the scientific phenomena behind each illustration.

And here’s the most exciting part: each response came to life through art. An artistic team from Mileva Films transformed the illustrations into augmented reality. When scanned with digital devices, the drawings came to life with voice and image, allowing the scientists to “speak” through art.

Art became a bridge between children’s imagination and scientific knowledge, turning questions into interactive experiences. The illustrations, enhanced with augmented reality, successfully explained concepts like the water cycle, pollution, and optical phenomena such as rainbows in a visual and engaging way.

The surprise on the students’ faces said it all: discovering the world through science and art is a unique experience. Because curiosity has no limits, and knowledge can inspire us to change the future.

This project took place on February 11, 2025, as part of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science—a key date to highlight the role of women in research and inspire scientific vocations among younger generations.

This is a new collaborative project by Mileva Films and the scientific community to transfer knowledge through art.
